Sew a 70 mm test swatch before a five-hour run

Our Dragon Snake & Katana takes over five hours to sew. A 70 mm window cut from the real file tests tension, coverage and stabilizer in about 45 minutes.

The full Dragon Snake & Katana has about 229,000 stitches: over five hours at 800 stitches per minute, and close to six at the 650–700 we recommend for it. Finding a tension or stabilizer problem three hours in is expensive.

What makes a good test swatch

Not a different small design, but a window cut from the real file, with:

  • the same objects, stitch types and density,
  • the same needle numbers as the full design, so the machine is threaded once for both,
  • the busiest area, where the most colours, layers and fine details meet.

Ours is a 71 × 71 mm square from the dragon's head: eye, teeth, whiskers, fur and scales. It takes about 45 minutes at 800 SPM, and it's a free download.

What to check on the swatch

  1. Tension: turn it over. On satin stitches, about a third of the column width should show bobbin thread down the middle.
  2. Coverage: no fabric showing through the fills.
  3. Registration: outlines landing on the edges of their colours, with no gaps.
  4. Puckering: the fabric around the stitching should lie flat. If it doesn't, add stabilizer or hoop more firmly, without stretching the fabric.
  5. Fine details: the eye and teeth should read clearly.

Photograph the front and the back, and note any thread breaks by the step number on the production sheet.

Then run the full design

Same fabric, same stabilizer, same thread, same speed. If the swatch passed, the full run behaves the same way.
